1841 Proof Copper Penny - probably bronzed !

The coin has some very minor scuffs, possibly from mis-handling, but otherwise in choice condition.

This is only the 2nd 1841 proof penny I have seen or handled. Both of which have come from 1839 proof sets.

It is known that 1839 proof sets were given out, as gifts, to special V.I.P's in the 1840's as mixed date proofs have been been found in several sets.

It is more than likely that the 1839 proof penny dies were no longer usable and this die was especially made for when proof pennies for the set were needed.

In the Alderley collection recently sold, the collector had obtained over twelve 1839 proof pennies (one of his favourite coins) but not one 1841 proof penny. Only 1 x 1839 proof penny was sold in the main collection the others sold separately - the collection penny fetched £1,600.00.

The reverse die used for this proof is with colon dots after REG: and it is more than likely that when it was finished being used as a proof die it was used to strike the rare 1841 currency pennies also with colon dots after REG:.

We know for a fact that it was the proof die that was used for the 1841 currency coins, with colon dots after REG:,  as they are identical in all ways, including a repaired letter. It is therefore probably that only ONE reverse die was ever used to make the proof and then the currency coins. Making these coins extremely rare !

None of the 1841 penny currency dies, without colon dots, are know in proof.
