1848 penny  Aa - (no overdate)                                    1848 Penny Ab - (no overdate)

All examples of this type seen, so far, have the         The 1st 8 of the date is inverted (Hard to see !)

4 slightly double struck.                                                 So far only found on examples of CP 1848 A

The 8 is over a tooth.                                                     The smaller circle of the 8 is at the bottom

* Note that the 4 is directly over the double tooth.      where as normally it would be at the top !

1848 Penny Ac - (No overdate). Slightly wider date.        1848 Penny Ac - (No overdate).

The 8 is over a gap between two teeth.                              The I of DEI has been double struck.

* Note that the 4 is also over a gap between two teeth     Slightly higher and to the right.

(The double tooth is to the left of the 4) and that the          Seen, so far, only with date Type Ab

1st 8 is slightly below the imaginary baseline.

1848 Penny Ad - (No overdate). Very similar to      1848 Ae - (No overdate)  Similar to Type Ab

Type Ab except that the 4 is now slightly lower         but the date needs re-striking as the foot of

and still to the right of the double tooth and the         the 1 has virtually lost it's base, especially on

last 8 is aligned more over tooth than gap.                the left side. The foot of the 4 is completely gone

* The I of DEI is slightly double struck but the            and the whole of the left side, of the main part, of

understrike 8 is only just visible to the left side         the numeral is very weak.  I of DEI double struck.

otherwise is in correct height alignment.

1848 penny B - 8 over 6

1848 penny C - 8 over 7 (Type 1) Down bar of 7 more to front

1848 penny Ca - 8 over 7 (Type 1) - with 'E' of DEF double struck

1848 penny D - 8 over 7 (Type 1)

Down bar of 7 more to back of 8

Appears to be the scarcer type

1848 penny E - 8 over 7 (Type 1) as per 'C' but with all the numerals double struck !

The more raised numerals are struck to the left of the lower numerals

1848 penny Ea - 8 over 7 (Type 1) as per 'C' but with all the numerals double struck !

The more raised numerals are struck to the right of the lower numerals

* In fact the last 8 (over the 7) appears to have a line below the double striking indicating that possibly that there was a third attempt of the 8 being re-punched !

1848 Penny F - 8 over 7 (Type 1) as per 'C' but the 7 is more clearly defined in this type than any other.

The top bar of the 7 shows very clearly inside the top section of the 8. The front lower tip of the 7 shows outside the top circle of the 8 at the mid point. The back of the 7 shows at the mid point, on the right hand side of the 8.

The sloping down bar of the 7 shows clearly in the right lower section of the 8 - touching the inner side of the 8.

Lastly a small fraction of the foot of the 7 shows below the lower circle of the 8.
