  All examples of this type seen, so far,

have the 4 slightly double struck.

The 1 is over a gap

The 4 is over the 'double' tooth 

The 'last' 8 is over a tooth.

The '1st' 8 of the date is inverted

(Hard to see !)

The smaller circle of the 8 is at 

the bottom where as normally 

it would be at the top !

Similar to Ad  but the foot of the 1

is worn as is the foot of the 4.

CP 1848 A (Plain date - over overstrike) - Date

Type Aa & Ab have the 1 over a gap. The 4 over the double tooth.

Type Ac has the 1 over a gap. The 4 is over a gap and to the right of the 'double' tooth 

Type Ad; Ae & Af have the 1 over a tooth. The 4 is over a gap or to the right of the 'double' tooth.

 

CP 1848 A (Plain date - over overstrike) - Obverse

 

1848 Penny Ab - (No overdate).

    The I of DEI has been double struck.

Slightly higher and to the right.

Seen, so far, only with date Type Ab

           

CP 1848 B (Date - last 8 over 6)

CP 1848 C & D (Date - last 8 over 7)

    

1848 penny C - 8 over 7 (Type 1)

Down bar of 7 runs through the 

centre of the lower 8 'circle'.

The numerals are on the 

imaginary baseline.

1848 penny Ca - 8 over 7 (Type 1) as per 'C'

but with all the numerals double struck !

The more raised numerals are struck 

to the right of the lower numerals.

1848 Penny D - 8 over 7 (Type 2) 

Down bar of 7 runs slightly right of 

centre of the lower 8 'circle'.

The 7 is more clearly defined.

Down bar of 7 runs slightly right of 

centre of the lower 8 'circle'.

Possibly a worn version of D !?

 

1848 Penny D - 8 over 7 (Type 1) Down bar of 7 runs slightly right of centre of the lower 8 'circle'.

The top bar of the 7 shows very clearly inside the top section of the 8. 

The front lower tip of the 7 shows outside the top circle of the 8 at the mid point. 

The back of the 7 shows at the mid point, on the right hand side of the 8.

The sloping down bar of the 7 shows clearly in the right lower section of the 8 - touching the inner side of the 8.

Lastly a small fraction of the foot of the 7 shows below the lower circle of the 8.

The 4 is just below the imaginary baseline.
