1853 Copper penny - date style A - italic - open between top & bulge

Large ball - extends behind down stroke

The numerals are slightly wider spaced than either of the other two varieties

*This example sent in by Ian Fall (8 March 2007) with the below comments.

1853 Copper penny - date style Aa - italic - similar to style A but:-

  • The centre stalk of the 3 is much thicker
  • The large border bead is under the centre of the 5 as opposed to centre left
  • The 5 is much closer to the 3 and the date width about 9 beads as opposed to 10
  • Ball and down stroke of 5 almost touch
  • The numerals are ‘fatter’  and consequently, for example, the opening between top and bulge of 5 is narrower

* This example sent in by Ian Fall (21 February 2008) with the below comments

1853 Copper penny - date style Ab - italic - similar to style A but:-

  • The centre stalk of the 3 is slightly longer and thinner than Styles A and Aa

  • The 5 is much closer to the 8 so that the larger border bead is now to the right of the 5

  • The italic ‘5’ is tilted anticlockwise so that the top serif is now almost in line with the other numerals

  • In this example the 5 is also double struck

* My comments: The top bar of the 5 is now above the (imaginary) 'line' of the top of the  '18'

                            The bar of the 5 is slightly shorter than both type A & Aa

                            The bulbous back tail of the 5 has an extra 'bit' showing at the left side

                             probably due to a repair strike. Even on a worn coin it appears as a larger 'ball'

                            There is a wider gap between the 5 and the 3 than for Type Aa

1853 Copper penny - date style B - 5 upright - top curled up

Gap between ball and down stroke.

Centre stalk of 3 thicker - at end

1853 Copper penny - date style C - 5 upright - Shorter top & a bit straighter

Ball and down stroke nearly meet

Centre stalk of 3 thinner - at end (virtually to a point)

1853 Copper penny - date style C (?)

Date: 3 over 3 and also noted with this die that the E of DEI has also been repaired and double struck.

(My thanks to Ian Fall for the above scans 24/4/2008)

1853 Copper penny - date style D - 5 upright - end tip curled up

Gap between ball and down stroke.

The 3 is closer to the 5 than any of the above dies

(My thanks to Ian Fall for the above scan 5/5/2006)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Style B & C are very similar.
* There could easily be other styles that I have not come across yet !?
