1999 Millennium £5 coin. Edge (Incuse): WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE I have now discovered (5 May 2009) that TWO different edge collars have been used for this coin, with TWO different fonts.
I show a picture of just the word - PAST - to show the difference. The rest of the words are similar in style to the types shown
Edge 1 - An Arial style font has been used. Edge 2: - A Times Roman style font has been used The lettering is slightly smaller than type 2 The lettering is slightly larger than type 1 The T has a very tiny top bar The T has a wide top bar NONE of the letters have serifs ALL the letters have serifs.
As I have only just discovered that this coin has TWO different edge fonts I do not know if equal quantities of both have been made or if there are more of one than the other. I have a ratio of 5 type 1 edge to each type 2 edge. Is the type 2 edge scarcer ? * I have noted that on the 2000 £5 Millennium coin the edge is type 2. It is therefore possible that edge 1 was used for the early 1st issue of coins and that edge 2 was used for later striking of 1999 £5 Millennium coins and into 2000 ! Or that the 1999 £5 with edge type 2 were issued in 2000 as no separate 2000 £5 were issued for circulation. The 2000's are only available in card wallet of issue or from the proof set.
