2008 was the year that the Royal Mint decided to change the design of the British coinage to the so called 'shield' design with each of the coins from 1 pence through to the 50 pence showing a part of that design ! It now appears that it was also the year that the Royal Mint made several mistakes during the minting process. The most famous is the 20 pence with NO date on either side - as they had 'muled' and earlier obverse with the new reverse - neither of which had a date !!
Since 1825 the British penny has been stuck in what is known as 'medal' alignment meaning that when the obverse of the coin is placed upright and then turned sideways the reverse too would be upright - as per the pictures above. However, it appears that an employee at the Royal Mint in 2008, on a particular day, made an error in setting up the dies and struck the penny coin with the reverse inverted as shown below.
As yet there appears to be only a couple of sightings of this error striking. As to how many were made - Sorry I don't know. I understand that the Royal Mint have confirmed that this type of inverted reverse penny is of their making but do not offer a figure of the amount produced in this way. I understand that Ebay has had several sales of 2008 5 pence with inverted reverse @ £45.00 - £50.00 but as yet no sale of the penny. We would be interested if anyone has either the 1 penny or the 5 pence for sale.
