                                                          1851 Copper Penny  -

                      Date:  Style 1                                                           Date:  Style 1A

1 - Has a good wide base foot                               1 - As Style 1 (wide base foot)

8 - Large open circular inner area                          8 - As Style 1 (slightly smaller circular inner area)*

5 - Open space between top bar & bulge             * could be due to coin wear with the 8 being flattened

      & open area within bulge                                   5  - As Style 1 (open inner areas)

Good numerical alignment                                      Date alignment offline - 51 slightly tilted back

                         Date:  Style 2                                                    Date  Style 2A

1 - Has a very narrow foot                                        1 - As Style 2 (very narrow foot) 1 over gap between 2 teeth

8 - Small oval inner area                                          8 - As Style 2 (small oval inner area)

5 - Narrow, with large under area of top bar          5 - As Style 2 (narrow inner areas)

     & small inner area within bulge                          1 - Last 1 has a thin I under the 1 showing

                                                                                       at top & bottom of the digit (the under I has no foot)

       Date: Style 2B  (All numerals doubled)                                    Date  Style 2Aa

5 - The base of the 5 is slightly closer to the 8               Very similar in style to 2A (above) but now

      It is now above a gap rather than over the                All of the digits have been double struck or repaired

      doubled border tooth. (Observation mine)               The 1st '1' has been restruck to the right of the original

     (Picture sent in by I.F. 30/11/07)                                 digit and now appears to be over the left side of a tooth.

                                                                                             The last '1' now has a bit of 1 above, below and to the

                                                                                             left of the original 1. Therefore a later repair ! repair!

Date: Style 3 (probably occurred before style 2)

This date style has been brought to my

attention (27/9/07) by I.F. and it appears to

be a combination of the date: Style 1 & 2

1 - Has a very narrow foot (as per style 2)

8 - Large open circular inner area (as per style 1)

5 - Open space between top bar & bulge

     & open area within bulge (as per style 1)

*   The 5 also appears to have re-entered over a 5

     (the underneath one is slightly higher)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seen so far:
Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 1     =  2
Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 1A  =  2
Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 2     =  4
Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2    =  2
Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2A  = 3
Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2B  = 1
Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 3     = 1
The crossover style for both types appears to be on Style 2
The near colon (Type 3) is the scarcer of the two types.
I will be very pleased to hear from anyone that can show that they have different examples.
**I have also been advised that many of the obverses on these coins have a repaired E in DEI.
The foot of the E had been broken off. A tiny bump also appears above the top upstroke of the E !?
Note also that the E is out of alignment and tilts backwards slightly.
This doubled or repaired E has been seen paired with Date style 2B (I.F. 30/11/07)
