Crown 1845 A - Large date - plain tail 4 - 7 ½  or 8 teeth from below 1 to end of 5

Crown 1845 B - Small (narrower) date - plain tail 4 - 7 teeth from below 1 to end of 5

There are a few slight differences in the numerals

* The 1 has a longer top left serif (in the smaller date)

The 8 is similar except it has a slightly smaller top inner-circle (in the smaller date)

The 4  is similar except that the foot serifs are virtually non existent (in the smaller date)

The 5 is slightly smaller and more squat - the top bar is longer and curves up to a point, the back bar is more upright and the lower circle is more rounded

Crown 1845 C -  Semi or slight slant up tail 4 - 7 ½ teeth from below 1 to end of 5

Also noted on this example - Deformed 8 & part filled in 5.

The 8 has a slightly deformed look

The 5 is slightly in-filled

Crown 1845 D - Semi or slight slant up tail 4 - 8 teeth from below 1 to end of 5

Crown 1845 E - Full slant up tail to 4  (sent in by P.B. March 2010)

The 1 has a short top bar and the foot has a centre indented foot ?

The 4 has a fully extended slant up tail and a centre indented foot ?

(No sure about the foot as the picture is beginning to blur)

* Not sure if it is large or small numerals.

November 2009

It is only recently that I have noted the difference in date size and fonts in the 1845 Crown. In 20 examples I have examined only ONE example has had the small date. It therefore appears to be a rarer type than the larger date.

Plain end tail              Semi slant up tail         Full slant up tail

           1845 A                         1845 C/D                   1845 E

March 2010

Different serif endings to the tail of the 4.

It is possible that the plain tail 4 is a worn tail of the semi slant up tail to the 4 die (middle picture).

My thanks to P.B. who saw my website and sent me the picture of an example of a full slant up tail example (see above) unfortunately the picture is of low pixel quality that I cannot expand the 4 any further without it blurring.
