Gibraltar The British colony of Gibraltar is located at the tip of Spain that is just above Morocco, in Northern Africa. ~~~~~~~ Area of 2.25 square miles (6.5 square Kilometres). The Spanish 'Real' was the official currency of Gibraltar until 1825 and circulated alongside other Spanish and British currencies until 1898. ~~~~~~~~ Some token coinage was made between 1802 and 1820 by shop keepers due to the lack of small change. These coins were in the denomination of Quarto(s) issued by Robert Keeling, Richard Cattons & James Spittles. ~~~~~~~~ British Colony - Token Coinage ~~~~~~~~~~ Token coinage was used and accepted at various stores within the town. Mainly by the British troops stationed there. ~~~~~~~~~~ This example is for use at Robert Keeling & Son's It appears that Robert Keeling was the owner of a wine store possibly in the Cooperage district with a personal address in Governor's Lane.

GIB 1820 2 Quartos - Token coinage payable at James Spittles Rev. Several small indents. (It seems that many Gibraltar coins suffer from indents !!) Grade: Fine or better. Price: £15.00 - 1 only. ~~~~~~~~ In 1825 circulating coins were pegged to the British Pound A Quart = 1 Farthing ~~~~~~~~ In 1841 The 1st Regular coinage for Gibraltar was made with currency coins struck in 1842 using the proof dies. A total of 387,072 quarts were struck worth £436 (Pounds) & 16 Shillings or 2016 Spanish dollars. Issued as 1/2 Quart, 1 Quart & 2 Quarts. ~~~~~~~~~ The 1842 2 Quarts are nothing special but the 1 Quart and Half Quart are in better grades.

Price: £40.00 (No. 2) ~~~~~~~~~~ In 1872 the Spanish currency became the sole legal tender currency in Gibraltar. However in 1898 the Spanish Peseta dropped in value and the British Pound Sterling again replaced Spanish coins and became the sole currency. The British imported both British coins and banknotes. ~~~~~~~~~ In 1967 the British inhabitants votes overwhelmingly to remain under British rule and a commemorative Crown (5 Shillings) was issued. ~~~~~~~~~ In 1988 new 'decimal' coins were struck for Gibraltar by the Pobjoy Mint (Private British Mint) and continue to issue the coins for Gibraltar up to today !
