1692 Maundy Fourpence - G of GVLIELMVS below bust.  Stop between R . I of MAR.IA

*Spink in their new catalogue list the MAR.IA variety as Extremely rare.

However, in total agreement with David Seaman, a specialist in Maundy (especially in the William & Mary series) we both believe that this is a 'blob' (flaw) before the I of MAR.IA and NOT a colon dot ! There is a similar, smaller flaw to the right of the I just above the foot.

Date: 1692 with 2 clearly over a 1 or is it a 1 over a 2 ? The 1 looks slightly higher than the 2.

Was this an 1691 die re-used with the 2 struck not quite as deep as the 1 ? Or did the die repairer forget the the die would be reversed when repairing the 1 and strike it on the wrong side ??

Date type:  . 1692  (Stop before 1 of date but not after).

Not sure if the listing of MAR.IA includes the variety of the date: 2 over 1

* Rev. Listed as 'Fair' only because the 4 has been weakly struck.
