Mombasa (Kenya) Mombasa is a small island situated on the Eastern side of Kenya (sort of within Kenya). It was an important sea port. In 1837 the island was seized by Seyyid Said of Oman and annexed to Zanzibar. In 1887 the Sultan of Zanzibar relinquished the port of Mombasa to British administration. It was occupied by the imperial British East Africa Company and for the following two decades was the capital of British East Africa. The silver coins of Mombasa are very scarce and were only issued dated either 1888 or 1890, and produced by the Heaton Mint of Birmingham. The copper 1 Pice coins are fairly common and easy to find.
