M4 - 1746 Maundy Fourpence - Date: 6 over 3 (new and unlisted in any catalogue or reference book, as yet !) Probably extremely scarce as in the past every 1746 4d I have seen has had the normal (no overdate) type of reverse. This overdate is known for the 3d & 1d. As yet not found for the 2d. I have included on this page the reverse style of the normal 1746 reverse and that of the overdate. It is clear that they are different. On the normal the 46 are closer together. MAG starts close to the colon dot higher up. The R of FR & the E are below the foot of the 4. The legend on the left is well spaced and there is plenty of space for the .17 The 1746 overdate reverse is that of the 1743 reverse die that has been re-used and the 6 added on top. There has been discussions and comments in reference books that the 6 is over a 5. I wish to refute that myth when you have a coin as mine that clearly shows the back bar of the 3 ! It is understandable in some way for examples that did not have a clear back bar to jump to the conclusion that the 3 was a 5. But it appears that none of these researchers thought of where the 5 came from - as there never was a 1745 Maundy 4d; 2; or 1d ever made. If they had thought of comparing the reverses of the 3d & 1d on the overdate with that of 1743 they might have found that they were the same and errors in recording incorrect data would have been avoided.
