SX 1787 no Hearts                           SX 1787 - with Hearts

                                                               * Hearts in top right half of shield - 5 in all 3 above Lion & 2 below

Note: It has been established that the "NO Hearts" type shield, on the reverse of the coin, was the first to be used and the "Hearts" were added to later dies.

Date variations:

               Date: Type 1 - Plain 7            Date Type 2 - 7 has a serif  both       Date Type 3 - 7 has a thinner serif

above and below bar (fairly solid)       that is below only (slightly smaller ?)

There are several variations in the date but the more obvious one is with the 7 as shown above.

Type 1: The 'Plain 7' is found with both the 'NO Hearts' & the 'Hearts' types and appears to be the commoner type.

Type 2: The '7 with serif both sides of the bar' I have found, so far, with 'NO Hearts' type only but at a 30% ratio (about 1 in 3), to the plain 7.

Type 3: This type of 'serif 7' I have found only with 'Hearts' type and at a 15% ratio (about 1 per 6), to the plain 7.

I have also noted that the 8's also appear to be in different styles also. The majority appear to have thick body, as an S running from top right to bottom left. The example of my Type 1 also appears to have the 8 'upside down' as the smaller circle at a the bottom with the larger at the top. On most of the other examples I have looked at the circles appear to be either of similar size or the smaller circle at the top. On Type 3, the 8 is smaller and of a different font altogether.

All the numerals in Type 3 are slightly smaller than the other two types. The top of the Arabic 1 curls downwards.

At this stage I have decided only to list the different types of 7 so as not to over complicate matters.
