GR 1847 A - Obv.

GR 1847 A - Rev.

GR 1847 A - Date: 7 over 8

For collectors that are unfamiliar with this over-date variety might find it useful to read my note on

1847 over 8 varieties.   A very elusive and hard to find date variety not to be

confused with 8 over 7.

GR 1847 B -  Obv. A slightly strange semi-circular extremely fine die crack less than a hair's width.

Starting along the tops of EGIN of REGINA then along the base of NA and

onto the base of F: D:, below Victoria's truncated bust and into VICT of VICTORIA.

Rev. Slight trace of ghosting of the front of Victoria's face due to die clashing.

Date: 7 over 8 (Reason for decision for calling it 7 over 8)

This example is not 100% clear cut as being a 7 over 8.

The top bar of the 7 is clearly over the top of the 8 as is the leg as far as the

centre of the 8. After that the lower part of the 7 leg and lower part of the 8 are

virtually at the same level. The bit of the 7 on the base of the 8 is above as is

the small bit that is below the base of the 8.

All in all more of the 7 is above the 8.

This style of 7 font with the slightly curved leg has been listed by me as

Type A as there is a angled straight leg of the 7 listed by me as Type B.

All examples of 1847 over 8 Groats are RARE.

In the last 22 years, this is only the 6th example I have ever had.

Two other examples were in Fair to Fine grade.

My finest  example was in EF+-pAS. It was sold  February 2021.

That example had a choice pale green tone.

Grade: EF+ Obv. Bright with hint of tone in legend.  Rev. Brownish tone in legend & date.

                                 Extremely RARE
