1859 Date variations & comment on overdate

 SX 1859 A - Normal size numerals

With numerals widely spaced

SX 1859 Aa - Normal size numerals !

With all numerals closer together.

 SX 1859 A

Spacing as per type A

 SX 1859Aa

SX 1859 Ab - Slightly smaller numerals

  With numerals widely spaced

5 - Curled up end (instead of flat)

*It is very difficult to tell the normal from the smaller numerals unless one has both to hand.

Possible methods of determining !

The 1 of the 'normal' is taller than the 1 of the smaller.

The 8 of the 'normal' is slightly fatter than the 8 of the smaller.

The 5 of the 'normal' is slightly fatter than the 5 of the smaller.

The 5 of the 'normal' appears flat topped on the smaller the end curls up.

The 9 of the 'normal' is slightly fatter than the 9 of the smaller.

The 9 of the 'normal' is closer to the right hand ribbon than the smaller is.

(similar distance as the 'Aa' with the numerals close together) !

Date: 1859 over 8 ??

Does this variety exist !?

On the examples that I have seen and examined that pre-report to examples of 9 over 8

I have not as yet found an example that fully justifies that label.

On close examination of the below example - there are "bits" showing to the right of the 9.

These are I believe to be part of an inaccurate attempt to re-punch the 9.

 SX 1859 B

What appears to be 9 over 8 !

See larger 9 - at right >

SX 1859 B

There is a small 'bit' on top &

bottom (to the right) of the 9.

On very close examination one

can see there is the faintest

of lines denoting the back

spine of the 9.

So 9 over 9. NOT 9 over 8

 SX 1859 Ba

Another example of possible 9 over 8

 SX 1859 Ba

Another example of possible 9 over 8

Due to deep tone - difficult to say !
