|
The halfcrowns of George V from
1911 to 1926 are interesting as you can
get coins that have a virtually flat head
and virtually no hair on George's head
but coin is virtually As Struck !
As one can see by the virtually perfect
reverse and or with lustre or tone !
One of the reasons for this occurrence
could be due to the Obverse (head)
being more proud than perilous obverses
and continued use of the die whilst
striking
causes the hairline to flatten.
A second reason could be due to the
event of the 2nd World War (1914 -
18)
and the enormous amount of steel
required for armaments.
This shortage of steel for die
making required the coin dies to continue
working well past their normal usage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For this reason I have tried listing all
of my
halfcrowns in the .925 silver period,
1911 to 1919, with the quality of strike
for the obverse of the coin.
The reverse of the coin mostly appear to
have fairly good strikings.
The 3 level that I list are as
follows:-
Best:
"A strong strike "
(Rare as the die wore quite quickly)
Normal:
"Average head strike" or
"Reasonable head strike"
Weak:
"Soft or weak strike"
~~~~~~~~~~
Coins below VF? or VF grade are worn
anyway so there is no need to
identify what head strike they
might have been !
~~~~~~~~~~~
I noticed after sorting out over
250 lower grade 1911 - 19 halfcrowns
that it is the "P" of PENCE at 3 o'clock
and the "I" of HONI at 9 o'clock that are
first letter to wear away
1920 |
In February
1920 the price of silver rose to record prices - to 5/6d or (0.275
pence) per
ounce which meant that it cost more than the legal tender
value of the
coins to make them. As a result the government hastily decided to
reduce the fineness of the silver coinage from
the recognised 0.925
fineness to the new reduced 0.500 fineness.
This was achieved in the first instant by mixing
50%
silver & 50% copper together. This was quickly followed by mixing 50%
silver & 50% cupro-nickel ' with discarded' bullet shell cases - the cupro-nickel
consisted of 90%
copper &
10% nickel.
These early
coins when worn soon turned dull, with almost a sort of brownish
colour ! |
|
|
The low, flat
relief
head of obverse 3 makes it difficult to determine the
grade as even on a choice quality coin the 'flat' head looks to be only
in 'Fine' Grade !!
Really
good quality halfcrowns of this period are very hard to find especially
for 1925 |
1921 |
In 1921 the metal
mix was never considered quite right so the nickel
content was reduced from 10%
to 5% and the other 5% was now
manganese - but due to this the coins quickly
'coppered'.
Even new the coins
had a slightly gunmetal
grey appearance instead of a 'silver' colour. |
1922 |
The problem
of getting the right metal mix continued.
In 1922 the original
idea of using ½ silver & ½ copper was retried this
time with the blank or coin planchets being deeply
blanched or bleached
which meant that a higher percentage
of silver
resided on the coin surface -
which would give a more
silvered look to the coin.
Again this was not the solution !
