[HC] GB HALF CROWNS 1902 - 1936
GRADE
Price (£)
* On the obverse side of the better quality halfcrowns,
in bright condition, virtually none of the pictures do
justice to the coins possibly because of light bounces
back ?! However the pictures of the reverse side of the
coin are much better - possibly because there is
more design and the light is absorbed !
Coins in lower grades picture much better !?
1902 - 1910 Edward VII
Bright - very rare in this grade
Bright - rare in this grade
Choice - lightly toned
Bright - scarce in this grade
Deep, dark, rich tone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1911 - 1919 George V (0.925 silver)
Starting to lightly tone
1920 - 1936 George V (0.500 silver)
1920 - 2 (main) Obverse & 2 (?) Reverse dies
Rev. A + B (See Pictures & Davies - for difference!)
The change to 0.500 silver due to the high rising price
of silver did not improve the strike quality. The low, flat
relief head of obverse 3 makes it difficult to determine
the grade as even on a choice quality coin the head
looks to be only of Grade - Fine !!
The other problem with coins 1920 to 1927 is that the
metal mix of silver and copper tends to leave the coins
with a dull darkish grey appearance.
Really good quality halfcrowns of this period are
very hard to find especially 1925
1922 - 2 Reverse dies
1926 - 2 Obverse dies
1928 - 2 Reverse dies
1929 - 2 Reverse dies
