[ST]  SILVER  3 PENCE 1860 - 1879

GRADE

Price (£)

Victoria  [Young head]   1838 - 1887 (YH)

Obverse die 2 (1859 -68) appears to have

some of the similar problems encountered in

Obverse 1 with the colon dots of F: D:

Possibly because Obverse 2 is only a

re-touched version of Obverse 1 !

These are variations I have noted so far

For colon types after F: D:

See list on Silver 3d (1)

The transition from

Obverse 1 to Obverse 2

Now including the unusual

1863  Obverse 1G with

Obv. 1 Legend & Obv. 2 re-cut bust !

1860 - 1869 images of dates

1860 silver threepence

Mintage 3,405,600

or Ex Maundy  4,488

According to Davies Obv. 1 is

several times rarer than Obv. 2.

This appears to be incorrect !

As Obv. 2 appears to much scarcer

1860 - Obverse varieties

1860 A Obv. 1   'C' is plain. 'G' with short cross-bar
1860 B Obv. 1E  'C' with top serif. 'G' with long cross-bar

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1860 C Obv. 2  'C' with top serif. 'G' with long cross-bar
            Re-cut hair below ribbon - strong incuse lines
1860 D Obv. 2  'C' with top serif. 'G' with long cross-bar
            Re-cut hair below ribbon - strong incuse lines
            Missing colon dots after D. G. & F. D.
ST 1860 Ac Obv. 1  (F: D: type - Ac)  Normal 'C'
ST 1860 Ac Obv. 1  (F: D: type - Ac)  Normal 'C'
Short cross-bar 'G'  Slightly scuffed
Evidence of die clashing - above head
Rev. Trace of ghosting.  Extra metal on
rim between 6 & 8 o'clock. Dark toned F+ 22.50
ST 1860 Ac Obv. 1  (F: D: type - Ac)   Fair?/+ 6.50
ST 1860 B Obv. 1E*  (F: D: type - A) * As Victoria's
hair cannot be seen due to wear it is
impossible to be sure if this Obv. is
Obv. 1E or Obv. 2 !?  I list this coin as
Obv. 1E as it less rare than Obv. 2 and
in this grade it does not really matter ! Fair 9.50
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ST 1860 C Obv. 2  (F: D: type - A)  Full colon dots
