1888 - 2 date dies

Originally it was thought that ALL 1888

shillings were dated using a new 1888 die.

However, it was discovered about 20 years

ago that in fact the last 8 was struck over

a 7 and it was thought that ALL 1888

shillings were stuck over 1887 reverse dies

as all shillings examined seemed to point

to that conclusion.

I can now confirm that there is a RARE

1888 date type that the last 8 is NOT over

a 7. It is possible that very few examples

will be found as I have examined about

50 plus 1888 shilling and they have ALL but

one been over a 7.
