Victoria [Jubilee head] 1887 - 1892
1887 [JUBILEE head] 2 Obverse & 2 Reverse dies
1887 - Obverse & Reverse referencing - Explained
stock
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1887 Jubilee (Withdrawn) varieties
1887 Jubilee (2nd type reverse)
Between 1888 & 1890 it appears that
the Royal Mint engravers were given
free reign to re-engrave the lower
right side of the wreath, on the reverse.
As to why they decided to concentrate
on such a small area and leave the
rest of the reverse alone I cannot explain !
However, by 1891 they stopped 're-engraving'
this area of the reverse die and settled
on one die that first made it appearance in 1889.
I have found and listed 9 different examples
of their work. All are very minor re-cuts and
would certainly not been obvious to either the
public or in fact most coin researchers !
~~~~~~~~~~~
Why do I picture and list them ?
Because they exist and they are different
die varieties - however small ! And it might be
interesting to other variety collectors.
As to rarity - Who knows ?
It is too early to speculate.
I have too few examples to determine
rarity. I have some examples that occur
more often than others and these I can only
assume are the commoner of the dies
used for that date.

Difficult to explain - easiest to show
Obv. 2 J. E. B. below bust - bust 'hollowed'
Obv. 3 J. E. B. below bust - bust 'rounded'
1889 - 5 'new' reverse dies
As the identification of Obverse 3 is so new
it is difficult to determine which of the
die combinations exist and which don't !
Rarity of these combinations is also
to be etablished
confirmed

Victoria [Old head] 1893 - 1901
1893 - 2 Obverse dies
The reverse die A that Davies lists for the Old head
series, 1893 to 1898 is in fact the same reverse die,
as my Jubilee reverse H, or (Davies, reverse D),
which was first used in 1889. To keep to the Davies
referencing this Old head reverse die is now his
'new' reverse A.
